Chapter Sixteen: Going Home

Elliott smiled as he watched Aimee cuddling Frankie as she read him a story. Even though he was old enough to read himself, he was soaking in every chance he got to be a kid. And spoiled. In the three days they had been on his home island, both kids had been overly spoiled.

Laurel had started one fire since they'd been there, but it had been quickly extinguished. Everyone knew of the curse that she was under, and as he had expected, everyone pitched in to help protect her from herself, as well as protect the properties on the island.

Gretchen looked up from her computer. She was attempting to get a little work done while she could. Sarah was hounding her to help with the paperwork backlog while Gretchen had her scrambling to reschedule court hearings. Luckily, a lawyer friend was going to step in and give her a hand.

"I think Frankie is more than happy to be here."

"He's never had grandparents before. It's nice to see him reveling in it."

"Is it?" Gretchen asked. "Is it fair to introduce him to something that may or may not last?"

Their relationship was the one thing they hadn't readdressed since leaving the states. Elliott knew that it was only a matter of time, but he wanted to have some of the other drama taken care of before he pushed it.

"I think he's fine. No matter what, he can always visit my parents. And Laurel is quite fond of Delanie and the babies, so that's a good influence on her, too."

Laurel was at Delanie's as they spoke, helping her in the garden. Marty was down at the fire station after making fast friends with Vincent. Gretchen had emailed the retirement home that they had taken a trip together and she forgot to let them know. It wasn't far from the truth, just left out a few details.

"Any word on the people Jerren said you should talk to?"

"Not yet. Dyvana is tied up with a project, and Maci is just going to come with her, so it'll probably be at least a couple more days." Dyvana handled all things magical on Isle D'Asile, another island of dragon shifter firefighters, and Jerren's home island. His sister-in-law, Maci, had apprenticed under Dyvana and had an extensive knowledge and power all her own. They were traveling to Windebrosse Island to see how they could help.

Before Gretchen could turn back to her computer, Elliott grabbed her hand. "How about a date? Just you and me. We might as well take advantage of the lull before the storm, and the fact that we have plenty of childcare. The kids will be safe, we don't have to look over our shoulders, it'll be fun."

She watched him for a minute before she smiled. "It's a date."

He kissed her. “We have this little place called Old Towne. It’s not really an amusement park, but it is a destination.”

They called Delanie and talked with Aimee and Ruben, and once the kids were happily settled, they headed out about an hour later.
